Granular avalanche model in arbitrarily curved and twisted mountain terrain: a basis for the extension to debris flow / S.P. Pudasaini, K. Hutter.

Title: Granular avalanche model in arbitrarily curved and twisted mountain terrain: a basis for the extension to debris flow / S.P. Pudasaini, K. Hutter.
Author(s): Pudasaini, S. P.
Hutter, K.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Rotterdam: Millpress
Abstract: Presents two-dimensional depth-integrated theory for gravity driven free-surface granular flow through channel of nearly arbitrary geometry. Model extends Savage-Hutter (SH) theory using local coordinate system along generating curve (e.g., talweg) to incorporate effects of curvature and torsion along valleys and channelised corries. Summarises simplifying assumptions and discusses potential applications of avalanche equations to rock-avalanches, debris- and mud-flows, and pyroclastic- and moraine-flows. Presents summary derivation of depth-integrated dimensionless mass and momentum balance equations from which avalanche behaviour may be computed. Tests model against analytical similarity solutions describing unsteady translation motion and slope stability analysis. Anticipates use with GIS in avalanche-prone regions and inclusion of pore fluid pressure for modelling multi-phase mixtures in debris flows.
