Record #167561:

Decrease in numbers of the eastern rockhopper penguin Eudyptes chrysocome filholi at Marion Island, 1994/95-2002/03 / R.J.M. Crawford, and 8 others.

Title: Decrease in numbers of the eastern rockhopper penguin Eudyptes chrysocome filholi at Marion Island, 1994/95-2002/03 / R.J.M. Crawford, and 8 others.
Author(s): Crawford, R. J. M.
Date: 2003.
In: African Journal of Marine Science. (2003.), Vol. 25 (2003)
Abstract: Presents evidence for reduced numbers of rockhopper penguins at sub-Antarctic Marion Island, and considers reasons for decrease. Mass at arrival at breeding colonies of both males and females has decreased, as has mass of chicks at fledging, with pairs fledging on average only 0.4 chicks per year. Suggests that inadequate supply of food and over-dependence on crustaceans during chick rearing could be partly responsible for population decline, as marked increase in contribution of fish to diet in 1999/00 coincided with increase in mass at arrival. In special issue Seabirds and seals at the Prince Edward Islands.
