Abstract: Examines assumption of constant lapse rate when assessing effects of variations in temperature on melting glaciers. Notes variations in 2 m temperature above melting glacier surface intermediate between those of free atmosphere and glacier surface, and provides example from Pasterze Glacier in Austria of failure of constant lapse rate assumption. Proposes simple analytical thermodynamic glacier-wind model as improvement. Describes model tuning with Pasterze results, sensitivity experiments and performance for some other mid-latitude glaciers. Computes sensitivity of Pasterze surface mass balance to atmospheric warming using surface energy-balance model. Compares results when change in 2 m temperature along glacier is computed with glacier-wind model and with constant lapse rate assumption. Finds latter overestimates negative mass balance change by 22% for 1 °C warming.
