Abstract: Describes various forms of coercion and channels through which forced labour was distributed from late 1930s to Stalin's death in 1953. Reveals causes of Gulag and its perceived rationale. Details chronology of Gulag from first major projects (White Sea Canal and Norilsk metallurgy) to later unfinished projects. Discusses ways in which Soviet leadership tried to find balance between coercion and material incentives. Reveals problems of lost productivity and criminality.
