Rows of vertical steel-silos filled with debris - an effective and space-saving avalanche defence structure / E. Hestnes, Á. Jónsson.

Title: Rows of vertical steel-silos filled with debris - an effective and space-saving avalanche defence structure / E. Hestnes, Á. Jónsson.
Author(s): Hestnes, E.
Jónsson, Á.
Date: 2002.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2002.), Vol. 93 (2002)
Abstract: Describes alternative avalanche protection measure to conventional dams and mounds erected using stonewalls, geo-textile, steel fabrics, etc. Proposed system uses standard products in form of rows of vertically erected corrugated steel silos filled with debris, and arose in planning protection for settlement of Bolungarvík, Iceland. Stresses advantage of self-bearing vertical wall, which fixes silo spacing for any given snow depth. Describes various patterns and spacings for deflecting dams and ploughs, with silos located on stable horizontal platforms created by excavation and gravel compaction. Although systems had been recommended, none had been built at time of writing. Estimated cost comparisons indicate system is cheaper than conventional alternatives and saves space. Invites modelling studies to explore optimal dimensions and layout. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
