| Abstract: | Describes benefits of improved forecasting of snowfall and avalanches in Chilean Andes. Presents correlations between hours of road closure and total annual snowfall and estimates economic costs in terms of mine closure, border crossing closure and snow removal. Presents number of avalanches and number of hours of road closure as functions of total snowfall volume during individual storms. Compares total snowfall predicted 48 hours before and observed in actual storms and describes improved reliability of forecasts. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia. |
