Avalanche detection and meteorological observations at Makunosawa valley in Myoko, Japan / Y. Takeuchi, K. Akiyama, M. Irasawa.

Title: Avalanche detection and meteorological observations at Makunosawa valley in Myoko, Japan / Y. Takeuchi, K. Akiyama, M. Irasawa.
Author(s): Takeuchi, Y.
Akiyama, K.
Irasawa, M.
Date: 2002.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2002.), Vol. 93 (2002)
Abstract: Addresses prediction of dry slab avalanches and discusses meteorological conditions and stability of snow on slopes when avalanches are released. Uses results of avalanche monitoring, recorded meteorological data and snow pit observations from 2000 and 2001. Describes avalanche detection system incorporating poles and vibration sensor, and associated use of geophone and video camera. Describes valley topography and history of avalanche disasters. Presents statistics from 24 avalanches detected with geophone, including amplitude of associated tremor and meteorological conditions. Computes stability index of new snow on 40 degree slope and finds all avalanches occurred when index was below about 1.5, regarded as criterion for surface slab avalanche release. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
