Abstract: Describes use of avalanche data to adapt Eglit's dynamic model to conditions of Zailiyskiy Alatau range in Tien Shan mountains of Kazakhstan. Describes dataset, model and calibration, done on basis of runout distance and avalanche velocity. Finds friction coefficients depend on snow type and avalanche volume and provides approximating equations for dry and wet avalanches. Concludes calibrated model agrees well with field data for avalanche travel distance and velocities, and for flow heights of wet avalanches. For dry avalanches, however, observed flow heights greatly exceed those calculated, possibly indicating a need for air entrainment to be taken into account. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
