Abstract: Describes development of system to detect avalanches in railway systems by use of small vibration sensor. Describes methods of detection and issuing of alarm level appropriate to avalanche scale. Presents results of field test in Kurobe Canyon, Japan to examine practical performance. Reports error-free avalanche detection, with alarm level useful as criterion for rapid judgment of degree of restoration work required. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
