Record #167323:

Avalanches in mountain forests and possible effects on hazard zoning in Austria / P. Höller.

Title: Avalanches in mountain forests and possible effects on hazard zoning in Austria / P. Höller.
Author(s): Höller, P.
Date: 2002.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2002.), Vol. 93 (2002)
Abstract: Investigates harmful dense flow avalanches in forests, thought to require continuous weak layer over area 10 to 20 m in length. Aims to establish whether such weak layers (surface hoar, depth hoar) can form in gaps, openings and low density stands near timberline. Also investigates conditions for snow gliding. Reports observations of snow temperature and structure and snow glide rates from Stubai valley, Austria. Examines avalanche statistics and changes in total area of gaps (area 50 m² -500 m²) and clearings (area >500 m²). Concludes conditions for slab and glide avalanches exist in gaps and low density stands, but increases in total area of gaps have not led to increases in avalanche frequency. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
