Abstract: Examines regional approach to deriving estimates of friction parameters for new generation of hydraulic-continuum avalanche models. Uses one-dimensional Voellmy-Salm-based avalanche model (VARA1D). Constructs historical database of avalanche events in Veneto range in Italian Alps with known release conditions and runout positions. Describes estimation of friction coefficient μ using multivariate spaces with nine topographic parameters describing each avalanche path, and alternative use of regression for same purpose. Presents model calibrations, statistics for derived friction coefficients and Voltago avalanche path case study. Suggests improvements to regional approach and ways of utilising 'on site' data. Compares approaches using Monte Carlo simulations and highlights utility of incorporating uncertainty into avalanche mapping procedures. Presented at International Symposium on Avalanches, September 2001, Kirovsk, Russia.
