Record #167247:

Frost heave and pipeline upheaval buckling / Andrew C. Paler, Peter J. Williams.

Title: Frost heave and pipeline upheaval buckling / Andrew C. Paler, Peter J. Williams.
Author(s): Paler, Andrew C.
Williams, Peter J.
Date: 2003.
In: Canadian Geotechnical Journal. (2003.), Vol. 40(5) (2003)
Abstract: French Abstract. Describes how interaction between frost heave and upheaval buckling might threaten safety of an Arctic pipeline. Examines potential for horizontal variations in frost heave, arising from, e.g., natural variations of soil and thermal conditions, to cause small overbends in pipeline which then trigger upheaval buckling because of longitudinal compression in pipeline. Presents simple model of upheaval and quantifies interaction with locally enhanced frost heave. Calculates for typical parameters that a 0.25 m high 'hill' caused by frost heave over 200 m of pipeline would be unstable. Concludes that frost heave and upheaval can in some circumstances interact to threaten pipeline integrity.
