Abstract: Considers information on trends in two large colonies of macaroni penguin at Bullard Beach and Kildalkey Bay on sub-Antarctic Marion Island, and from smaller colonies distributed around island. Estimates of population have fallen, and number of chicks fledged per pair is considered insufficient to maintain population. Masses of males and females arriving to breed showed marked decrease in season following El Niño event. Crustaceans dominated food, but mass of chicks at fledging was significantly related to contribution of fish to diet.
