| Abstract: | Aims to assess for first time incidence of chemical defences against predation and microbial colonization in 18 abundant sessile or slow moving invertebrates from sub-Arctic Kongsford. Investigates palatability of body tissue of invertebrate species and their value as food source, using in situ experiments with natural assemblages in Kongsford. Complements these with quantitative laboratory assays using generalist predatory starfish Asterias rubens from North Sea. Compares assay results with biochemical composition of species to see whether palatability and feeding preferences coincide with nutritional quality of prey. Tests extracts of invertebrates for feeding deterrent activity to assess chemical defence against predation, and for inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. |
