An assessment of variations in mercury deposition to Antarctica over the past 34,000 years / Xuebin Yin, Liguang Sun, Zhouqing Xie.

Title: An assessment of variations in mercury deposition to Antarctica over the past 34,000 years / Xuebin Yin, Liguang Sun, Zhouqing Xie.

Abstract: Compares variation of mercury concentrations in 14 samples from Antarctic Dome C (Dome Concordia) core with precipitation proxies such as δ¹⁸O values and ¹⁸Be values. Finds significant correlations, concluding that, since accumulation rate is key influence on variations of Hg concentration, these can be used as proxy for precipitation rate. Reassesses variations in mercury deposition flux in Antarctica over past 34,000 years on basis of high-resolution δ¹⁸O records used as proxy for reconstructing precipitation rates. Finds highest mercury deposition flux about 3.80 pg cm⁻²a⁻¹ during Last Glacial Maximum, 3.5 times that in Holocene. Attributes this to fluctuations in natural, e.g., biological, mercury emissions.
