Abstract: Discusses records of major volcanic eruptions found in polar ice, their detection by various methods, and their use to date ice cores. Reviews how volcanic records depend on magnitude, type, location and composition of eruption, atmospheric aerosol transportation and local accumulation and post-depositional processes. Examines state of understanding of climate-volcanism connection and effects of large-scale volcanic eruptions on long-term climate changes.
