| Abstract: | Reports results of first mid-summer counts of surface-nesting seabirds, conducted during December 2001, in response to concerns about impact of long line fishing mortality. First census since early 1980s produced no evidence that populations of albatrosses and giant petrels had decreased, and showed significant increase in wandering albatross numbers. Significant decreases were noted for macaroni penguins (possibly due to competition for space with burgeoning population of fur seals), Crozet shags, and Kerguelen terns. Increased estimates for sub-Antarctic skuas, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, and southern giant petrels mostly resulted from greater coverage than for previous counts. |
