Abstract: Characterizes configuration of flow within given sector of upper-tropospheric flow of Southern Hemisphere subtropical jet as either single jet; broken subtropical jet; polar jet at upstream end of subtropical jet; or polar jet at downstream end of subtropical jet. Examination of potential vorticity maps and contour advection calculations suggests that characteristics of Rossby wave propagation and breaking differ between each flow configuration. Some flow configurations have preferred geographical locations, resulting in different geographical sectors having differing preferred configurations and variability, and hence different characteristics of Rossby wave propagation, for example, broken subtropical jet or polar jet with poleward wave breaking in Australian and Pacific Ocean sectors.
