Abstract: Accompanied by three Eskimo families, general description of year spent establishing post for native families. Original Eskimo inhabitants died out, although traces of old Eskimo encampment found during circumnavigation of island by canoe. Until then believed that no white man had over-wintered, remains found of possible last survivor of American schooner N.T. Gifford. Extended journey around island by dog-team proved impossible.
