Ocean-atmosphere-sea ice-snowpack interactions in the Arctic, and global change / Paul Shepson, Paty Matrai, Len Barrie, Jan Bottenheim.

Title: Ocean-atmosphere-sea ice-snowpack interactions in the Arctic, and global change / Paul Shepson, Paty Matrai, Len Barrie, Jan Bottenheim.
Author(s): Shepson, Paul.
Matrai, Paty.
Barrie, Len.
Bottenheim, Jan.
Date: 2003.
In: Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (2003.), Vol. 84(36) (2003)
Abstract: Discusses scientific issues arising from discovery of Arctic surface ozone depletion. Describes complex interplay between gas phase photochemistry, ice surface chemistry, marine biological processes, and reaction on/in aerosol particles. Emphasizes significance of exchange among snowpacks, sea ice and atmosphere of photochemicallly active gases. Suggests frost flowers on surface of re-frozen leads may provide one surface for such exchanges. Publicizes proposal for integrated, international study of ocean-atmosphere-sea ice-snowpack (OASIS) chemical exchange in Arctic region. Proposal's objectives include understanding of solar influence on physical, chemical and biologically-mediated exchange processes, links between these processes and climate change, particularly their influence on clouds, and determining impact on exchange processes of sea ice extent change.
