Performance of Japanese precipitation gauges in winter / Kotaro Yokoyama, Hiroyuki Ohno, Yasuhiro Kominami, Satoshi Inoue, Toshikazu Kawakata.

Title: Performance of Japanese precipitation gauges in winter / Kotaro Yokoyama, Hiroyuki Ohno, Yasuhiro Kominami, Satoshi Inoue, Toshikazu Kawakata.
Author(s): Yokoyama, Kotaro.
Ohno, Hiroyuki.
Kominami, Yasuhiro.
Inoue, Satoshi.
Kawakata, Toshikazu.
Date: 2003.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2003.), Vol. 65(3) (2003)
Abstract: Compares catch efficiencies of precipitation gauges over six winters in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Estimates "true" precipitation using Double Fence Intercomparison Reference (DFIR) gauge in accordance with WMO recommendation. Tested gauges are Rt-1 (tipping bucket type with heated funnel), Rt-3 (warm water type with water jacket) and Rt-4 (overflow type with heated reservoir), often used in Japan. Approximate catch ratios for snow at wind speed of 2 ms⁻¹ were 0.8 for Rt-4, 0.7 for Rt-1 and 0.6 for Rt-3, and those for rain at a wind speed of 6 ms-1 were 0.9, 0.8, 0.7 respectively. Tentatively attributes differences to gauge shape. Establishes relationship between catch ratio and wind speed at orifice for gauge models and precipitation types (snow or rain). Recommends corrections to measured values of winter precipitation and heating device to melt snow for gauge use in areas of heavy snowfall.
