| Abstract: | Describes coast people's relationship to natural forces, life and death. First documentation of drowning accidents here is from Eilert Sundt's research around 1850. He found that Norway's percentage of violent deaths was greater than in rest of Europe, with large number from drowning - in Tromsø diocese, 1 in 4 of deaths over 10 years age was at sea. Worse, this was taken fatalistically. Author shows how this gradually changed, as communications brought in modern risk assessment. Work uses variety of material: tradition, broadsheets, newspaper articles, weather forecasts etc. and he brings in such different theoretical approaches as modernisation theory, linguistic philosophy, sociology of science and media theory. |
