Abstract: Addresses probability of pipeline damage by stamukhas arising from seabed gouging. Presents mathematical probability model of gouging as function of sea depth. Uses field data to apply model to pipeline route off north-east shore of Sakhalin. Finds probability of gouging is maximum for sea depths around 5 metres. For depths of 20-25 metres, expectation is still of several events per 10 metre pipeline length over 30 years of service.
