Formation of oil-ice sandwich / Koh Izumiyama, Shotaro Uto.

Title: Formation of oil-ice sandwich / Koh Izumiyama, Shotaro Uto.
Author(s): Izumiyama, Koh.
Uto, Shotaro.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Mombetsu: Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association
In: Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium on Okhotsk Sea and Sea Ice, Mombetsu, Hokkaido, Japan, 23-27 February 2003. (2003.),
Abstract: Investigates phenomenon of oil-ice sandwich, in which oil spilled under ice cover is entrapped in ice under freezing conditions. Concern is with pollution prevention. Describes laboratory tank experiments using machine lubrication oil and bunker-A oil and ice thicknesses ranging from 2-7 cm. Describes process by which ice grows beneath and around oil layer, noting insulating effect of oil. Estimates time for formation of oil-ice sandwich in field conditions of Sakhalin area to be around 2 days (for 1 cm thick oil layer beneath 1 metre thick ice cover at -20°C to be covered by 1 cm thick ice layer)
