Abstract: | Seeks method of keeping ports in Hokkaido ice free in winter. Notes case of Otsu Fishing Port, where water freezing results from frazil ice accumulation on quayside by north-westerly winds. Describes tank experiments to test effectiveness of boom based method of controlling movement of frazil ice. Uses small polypropylene balls as frazil ice models and investigates mechanisms by which these are trapped by various types of ice boom at different drift rates. Finds strong correlation between maximum flow velocity at which movement of frazil ice can be controlled and boom draft. Compares results with those of previous studies. |
