Preliminary notes on the sea ice biota in the Arctic in summer 2001 / Johanna Ikävalko, Tuomo Roine.
Title: | Preliminary notes on the sea ice biota in the Arctic in summer 2001 / Johanna Ikävalko, Tuomo Roine. |
Author(s): | Ikävalko, Johanna. Roine, Tuomo. |
Date: | 2003. |
Publisher: | Mombetsu: Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association |
In: | Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium on Okhotsk Sea and Sea Ice, Mombetsu, Hokkaido, Japan, 23-27 February 2003. (2003.), |
Abstract: | Describes survey of DMS (Dimethylsulphate) producing algae and other protists in Arctic sea ice cover. Material from sea ice was collected as part of Swedish Arctic Ocean Expedition, 2001 to northwest Arctic Ocean and North Pole. Presents preliminary results from sites sampled while vessel was anchored to large ice floe near North Pole. Describes ice coring, sample extraction transport and subsequent chemical and biological analyses. Presents nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentrations and lists protists found, with emphasis on algae. Concludes that in Arctic sea ice diatoms, not Phaeocystis, are responsible for DMS production. |
