Modelling of superimposed ice formation and sub-surface melting in the Baltic Sea / Bin Cheng, Timo Vihma, Jouko Launianen.

Title: Modelling of superimposed ice formation and sub-surface melting in the Baltic Sea / Bin Cheng, Timo Vihma, Jouko Launianen.
Author(s): Cheng, Bin.
Vihma, Timo.
Launianen, Jouko.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Mombetsu: Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association
In: Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium on Okhotsk Sea and Sea Ice, Mombetsu, Hokkaido, Japan, 23-27 February 2003. (2003.),
Abstract: Studies superimposed ice formation on sea ice by percolation of snowmelt or rainfall followed by refreezing. Also simulates sub-surface melting of snow using field data obtained through Baltic Sea-Ice-Air Study (BASIS) project of GEWEX-BALTEX program. Summarises sea ice model, due to Launiainen and Cheng, and field observations. Model neglects microscopic processes such as meltwater drainage and snow densification and grain structure. Presents modelled refreezing of melted snow to superimposed ice for different combinations of snow density, thermal conductivity and extinction coefficient. Concludes superimposed ice forms mainly from snow melt and sub-surface melting provides up to 20% of total melting.
