| Abstract: | Intended as initial outline on how to monitor glaciers of Hindu Kush, Himalayan region. Beings with theoretical aspects of glacier mass balance, why it is worthy of study and how it can be measured. Describes ideal glacier for mass balance investigation and design of a glacier mass balance network. Practical section deals with measurements of ablation and accumulation, choice of measurement points and data analysis and reporting. Presents brief overview of possible additional measurements, e.g., of terminus variations and ice velocity. Includes sections on 'how to behave on a glacier' and fundamentals of high altitude medicine. |
