| Abstract: | Presents study of climate and permafrost changes in northern Russia. Uses observations of air and ground temperatures and seasonal thaw from meteorological and geocryological stations to analyse current and expected changes. Notes observed warmings of climate and upper permafrost horizons since mid-1960s and reports warming in frozen ground of up to 2-2.5 °C at 3 m depth. Forecasts changes in permafrost to 2020 and 2050. Discusses permafrost monitoring, its history in Russia, current state of observational network, and siting and automation of observation stations. Reports reduction in observation network over last 3-5 years and practical impossibility of permafrost monitoring in Russia at time of writing. Translated from Kriosfera Zemli, 1997 1(1) :47-58. |
