Abstract: Discusses vegetation and soil carbon content in Sakha Republic (Yakutiya), Russia and in permafrost regions in general. Summarises climatic factors and range of responses of permafrost ecosystems to climate warming. Focuses on CO₂ production in active layers of permafrost soils, noting high carbon content. Summarises results of long term observations of CO₂ fluxes made within framework of GAME(GEWEX(Global Energy and Water Experiment) Asian Monsoon Experiment)). Notes CO₂ release rate is maximum when uptake by growing vegetation is shutting down for winter and advocates including interaction between these processes in studies of atmospheric CO₂ enrichment. Stresses continuing difficulty of apportioning natural and anthropogenic contributions to current rise in atmospheric CO₂.
