On the problem of possible last-glacial forest-refuge-areas within the deep valleys of eastern Tibet / Burkhard Frenzel, Achim Bräuning, Sonja Adamczyk.

Title: On the problem of possible last-glacial forest-refuge-areas within the deep valleys of eastern Tibet / Burkhard Frenzel, Achim Bräuning, Sonja Adamczyk.
Author(s): Frenzel, Burkhard.
Bräuning, Achim.
Adamczyk, Sonja.
Date: 2003.
In: Erdkunde. (2003.), Vol. 57(3) (2003)
Abstract: Investigates whether, during last glaciation, forest-refuge areas existed only at periphery of Tibetan Plateau, as generally suggested, or also within deep east-Tibetan river gorges. Using data from six expeditions in period 1989-2001, discusses analyses of peat bog pollen dating from around Late Glacial-Holocene transition, dendroclimatological studies and distribution patterns of various botanical taxa. Notes very early immigration of forest plants into eastern Tibet after climate improvement. Examines protection from severe cold climate of Tibetan Plateau provided by 1200-m deep valleys and moisture availability. Concludes that one or more forest-refuge areas may have existed in deep east-Tibetan river gorges during last glaciation.
