| Abstract: | Examines cloudy band stratigraphy in ice samples from GRIP and NGRIP cores at around 2000 m depth. Obtains profiles of grey scale values from photographs of ice core slab sections taken immediately following recovery. Counts grey value peaks to estimate annual layer thicknesses (ALTs). Emphasizes annual grey value signal by smoothing profiles over windows half the width of local ALT estimated from ice flow modelling. ALTs estimated from these smoothed grey value profiles agree more closely with modelled ALTs than do unsmoothed profiles, particularly where layer thickness exceeds about 20 mm, suggesting multiple grey scale peaks within single year's ice. Compares grey scale and dielectric property (DEP) profiles.
