| Abstract: | Reconstructs past atmospheric CH₄ concentration at Dome Fuji, Antarctica from CH₄ content of firn. Calculates vertical age distribution of CH₄ from 1-D numerical diffusion model, accounting for molecular diffusion, downward air advection and bubble trapping. Uses iterative inverse method to reconstruct past concentrations from those measured at 14 depths from 10 to 104 m and calculated age distribution. Initialises with data from period 1700-1950 from Law Dome. Takes effective CH₄ diffusivity to be 1.291 times that derived for CO₂. Reconstruction agrees well with direct atmospheric concentration measurements at Antarctic stations, except in upper 30 m, where sampling does not resolve seasonal variation.
