In: National Institute of Polar Research. Memoirs. Special Issue. (2003.), Vol. 57 (2003)
Abstract: Suggests difficulties encountered in comparing ice core records from different locations arise from inadequate dating and production or depletion of certain greenhouse gases by chemical reactions between ice impurities and possibly by bacteria. Reviews greenhouse gas records from various ice cores and methods used to obtain them. Provides criteria based on observed and theoretically expected scatter to help assess reliability of single records or decide which of several detailed records is most reliable. Discusses separate criteria for each greenhouse gas, CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O. Concludes, for example, that N₂O artefacts are found in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica and are likely produced by chemical reactions or bacteria in ice. In: Global Scale Climate and Environment Study through Polar Deep Ice Cores: Proceedings of the International Symposium on the Dome Fuji Ice Core and Related Topics, 27-28 February 2001, Tokyo.
