| Abstract: | Reports use of satellite radar altimeter measurements to examine thinning of Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctica between 1992 and 2001. Reviews recent history of Larsen Ice Shelf collapse and suggested causes. Uses combination of glaciological, meteorological and oceanographic observations and modelling to establish ice shelf thinning as major cause of surface lowering observed, discounting alternatives such as eustatic sea level rise, variation in seawater density and densification of ice shelf column. Attributes ice thinning to increased summer surface melting and loss of basal ice through melting rather than decreased ice viscosity due to warming. Suggests enhanced ocean-driven melting may provide simple link between regional climate warming and successive disintegrations of section of Larsen Ice Shelf. |
