Abstract: Reviews current demographic and genetic status of New Zealand southern right whales at sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands, based on fieldwork at Port Ross, Laurie Harbour and Enderby Island from 1995-98. Discusses critical areas and periods when cows and calves are present in highest numbers and are most vulnerable to potential anthropogenic disturbance; estimates population size and assesses international significance of Auckland Islands whale population; and presents proposals for long-term monitoring programme.
