Abstract: Presents model for isotopic fractionation by freezing in an open system designed to examine regelation beneath Hamna Glacier, Sôya drainage, East Antarctica. One-dimensional model assumes near equilibrium and zero boundary layer thickness. Describes simulations for nine ratios of freezing to water input rates, which show clear distinction between closed and open systems. Uses model to analyse a measured isotopic curve from Hamna basal ice. Concludes this ice formed in an open system with a freezing/water input ratio of 10/4.
