Record #166534:
Densification and grain coarsening of melting snow / Shiqiao Zhou, M. Nakawo, S. Hashimoto, A. Sakai, H. Narita, N. Ishikawa.
Title: | Densification and grain coarsening of melting snow / Shiqiao Zhou, M. Nakawo, S. Hashimoto, A. Sakai, H. Narita, N. Ishikawa. |
Author(s): | Zhou, Shiqiao. Nakawo, M. Hashimoto, S. Sakai, A. Narita, H. Ishikawa, N. |
Date: | 2003. |
In: | Chinese Journal of Polar Science. (2003.), Vol. 14(1) (2003) |
Abstract: | Examines densification of wet snow, assuming snow behaves as viscous fluid with compactive viscosity. Focuses on relationship between compactive viscosity and density of melting seasonal snow. Describes snow pit fieldwork, snow grain photography and measurements of temperature and density made in Moshiri, Hokkaido, Japan. Analyses particle size distribution and relationship between compactive viscosity and grain size. Finds compactive viscosity decreases as density increases, in contrast to dry snow relation. Discusses grain coarsening behaviour in water-saturated and unsaturated cases. |
