Abstract: | Evaluates potential of radar penetration in measurement of sea ice thickness and its underside morphology. Presents results of fieldwork carried out during China's first Arctic scientific exploration in 1999 using new generation pulse EKKO 100A enhancement radar system. Analyses radar propagation through sea ice. Discusses relationship between sea ice types (e.g., multi-year and first year) and sea ice underside micro-morphology revealed by radar images. Analyses difference in effective area between upper and bottom sea ice surfaces, finding typical cross section length 32% greater along bottom surface. |
