Record #166509:

Which are the most suitable Antarctic subglacial lakes for exploration? / Martin J. Siegert.

Title: Which are the most suitable Antarctic subglacial lakes for exploration? / Martin J. Siegert.
Author(s): Siegert, Martin J.
Date: 2002.
In: Polar Geography. (2002.), Vol. 26(2) (2002)
Abstract: Examines objectives of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) for scientific exploration of Antarctic subglacial lakes in relation to author's published inventory of over 70 lakes and their physiographies. Presents sample radio echo sounding data revealing 11 lakes. Makes suggestions as to lake type most suited to meet SCAR's scientific goals, which include discovery of life, acquisition of paleoclimatic records and formulation of geological history. Notes unrepresentative physiography of Lake Vostok and difficulty of fully characterizing such a large lake. Advocates alternatives such as one of small lakes around Dome C.
