Abstract: Discusses mountain glaciers and past glacier extents as sources of quantitative palaeoclimatic information. Reviews glacier mass balance and climate links, explaining concept of mass balance gradient and significance of equilibrium line altitude (ELA). Reviews approaches to modelling mountain glacier response to climate fluctuations, noting sensitivity on time scales of few years to few decades, and focusing on relationship between ELA, temperature and precipitation. Examples from European Alps provide insight into Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate fluctuations. Notes alpine glaciers currently larger than during long periods of early Holocene. Stresses links to other palaeoclimatic information, such as tree line variation, and need for better dating, e.g. of moraines.
