Record #166504:

Automated monitoring of snow cover over South America using GOES imager data / P. Romanov, D. Tarpley.

Title: Automated monitoring of snow cover over South America using GOES imager data / P. Romanov, D. Tarpley.
Author(s): Romanov, P.
Tarpley, D.
Date: 2003.
In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2003.), Vol. 24(5) (2003)
Abstract: Describes automated system for routine mapping of snow cover in South America. Seeks to provide operational, high spatial resolution data on snow areal extent and spatial variation for use in numerical weather prediction and climate models. System uses measurements in visible, middle infrared and infrared made by Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager. Algorithm employs both spectral and temporal variability to ensure accurate snow discrimination and mapping. Presents results from first eighteen months (from May 2000) of system's operation. Finds 4 km spatial resolution inadequate and orographic cloud cover too persistent for monitoring tropical glaciers and ice fields. Reports extent of snow cover lower than in earlier studies and suggests new product may find use in their correction.
