Abstract: Analyses multi-channel scanning microwave radiometer (MSMR) data for period June 1999-May 2001 to study sea ice extent and seasonal variability over Antarctic region. Describes characteristics of MSMR instrument, data analysis and results obtained. Compares MSMR-derived annual average estimates of sea ice extent with SMMR estimates over different sectors of Southern Polar Ocean to study secular trends over last two decades. Finds significant differences for Weddell Sea and Ross Sea sectors, suggesting continuation of trends observed during SMMR period. Observes slightly positive trend over Antarctic region as a whole. Discusses this increasing trend and possible indication of an acceleration in time.
