Record #166500:

Determining depth and ice thickness of shallow sub-Arctic lakes using space-borne optical and SAR data / C.R. Duguay, P.M. Lafleur.

Title: Determining depth and ice thickness of shallow sub-Arctic lakes using space-borne optical and SAR data / C.R. Duguay, P.M. Lafleur.

Date: 2003.
In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2003.), Vol. 24(3) (2003)
Abstract: Presents approach for determining depth and ice thickness of shallow sub-Arctic tundra/forest lakes and ponds using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and ERS-1 SAR data. Studies area in Hudson Bay Lowland near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Uses summertime Landsat TM image to estimate lake depth, followed by series of wintertime ERS-1 images to determine when and which lakes freeze to their beds during winter. Combines these derived products to estimate ice thickness on a monthly basis (maxima typically 1-2 m). Finds approach well-suited to shallow oligotrophic and ultra-oligotrophic lakes, but requiring improvement for lakes with high nutrient concentrations or suspended sediment loads.
