| Abstract: | Presents research on Maiella Massif into conditions favouring preservation of sporadic mountain permafrost. Reports temperature measurements on rock glaciers at base of winter snow cover. Possible presence of sporadic permafrost is indicated. If confirmed, this would represent southernmost occurrence in Europe. Describes area's geomorphology and climatology, analysing observations spanning 1969-90. General climatology suggests permafrost restricted to elevations above 2750 m a.s.l., but observations of possible permafrost at ca. 2300-2400 m a.s.l. indicate the importance of microclimate. |
