Abstract: Presents mass balance model for Vatnajökull, Iceland based on calculation of surface energy balance. Uses data from 1996 glacio-meteorological experiment to analyse energy balance and calibrate model. Includes effects of volcanic debris and snow ageing on albedo. Forces model with long data records from meteorological stations close to ice cap. Models incoming longwave radiation using temperature in free atmosphere rather than at 2 m level because of presence of thin, but significant katabatic layer. Estimates sensitivities of mass balance to changes in temperature and precipitation, finding strong variation over ice cap.
