| Abstract: | Summarizes results of 11 year mass balance study of Vatnajökull (45-50 locations) and similar work on Langjökull (22 locations) from 1996-2001. Reports mass balance on Vatnajökull positive from 1991-1994, close to zero 1994-1995 and negative thereafter, with 0.6% of total mass lost over 11 years. Mass balance on Langjökull was negative after 1996, with 3% of total mass lost. Directly correlated mass balances of two ice caps reflect low winter snow accumulation and high annual temperatures. |
