Record #166488:

Seismic soundings of sediment thickness on Skeidharársandur, SE-Iceland / Magnús T. Gudhmundsson, Aurélie Bonnel, Karl Gunnarsson.

Title: Seismic soundings of sediment thickness on Skeidharársandur, SE-Iceland / Magnús T. Gudhmundsson, Aurélie Bonnel, Karl Gunnarsson.
Author(s): Gudhmundsson, Magnús T.
Bonnel, Aurélie.
Gunnarsson, Karl.
Date: 2002.
In: Jökull. (2002.), Vol. 51 (2002)
Abstract: Presents results of small-scale seismic reflection survey of Skeidharársandur, the largest active sandur in Iceland, located between Atlantic Ocean and Skeidharárjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. Describes survey area and collection and interpretation of ten seismic profiles collected at scattered locations in 1997 and 1999. Finds sediment thickness of 80-100 m near terminus of Skeidharárjökull, increasing to about 250 m at the coast. Suggests valley in bedrock south of Skaftafell probably eroded by Pleistocene ice stream. Discusses stratigraphy and infers rate of Holocene sedimentation and frequency of high-magnitude jökulhlaups (a few per century). Icelandic summary.
