| Abstract: | Describes ice core drilling project to 100 m depth on Hofsjökull ice cap in summer 2001. Focuses on technical aspects of drilling and outlines possible improvements in existing drilling technique for temperate ice caps. Summarises physical characteristics of Hofsjökull and drill site logistics. Describes in detail drilling operation and equipment (AWI-type drill intended for use in shallow dry holes on polar ice sheets) and compares with earlier operation on Bárdharbunga. Reports difficulties encountered below 35 m ice depth associated with water table and ice-chip transport. Reports preliminary observations of core stratigraphy and density. Makes recommendations for future work at Grímsvötn and Langjökull sites. |
