Record #166484:

Chilled out in the ice-age Atlantic / Alan C. Mix.

Title: Chilled out in the ice-age Atlantic / Alan C. Mix.
Author(s): Mix, Alan C.
Date: 2003.
In: Nature. (2003.), Vol. 425(6953) (2003)
Abstract: News and views piece describing collection of papers from GLAMAP-2000 (Glacial Atlantic Ocean Mapping) project published in Paleoceanography. Papers represent most detailed attempt yet to reconstruct Atlantic sea surface temperatures for height of last glacial period, 21,000 years ago. Lists some associated methods, e.g., inverse model used to assimilate sparse data on past temperatures into simple model of upper ocean. Presents some key findings and compares them with those from earlier CLIMAP project. GLAMAP-2000 suggests greater summer melting of sea ice through Norwegian Sea and parts of Arctic Ocean and greater sea ice seasonality in Southern Ocean. Discusses biases in temperature data and possible improvements.
